AVI is one of the oldest video containers still in circulation - Microsoft introduced it in 1992. It usually holds older codecs like DivX, Xvid, or MPEG-4 Part 2, which means AVI files tend to be large and do not play well on modern phones, browsers, or streaming devices.
Converting AVI to MP4 (H.264) almost always involves re-encoding, because AVI's codecs rarely match what MP4 uses - that is different from MOV or MKV, which can often just be repackaged. Re-encoding takes a little longer, but the payoff is real: the MP4 is typically much smaller than the original AVI at comparable quality, and it plays everywhere.
Drop your AVI file above, make sure MP4 is the output, optionally pick a resolution and quality under Options, then click Convert and Download.
AVI typically uses older codecs (DivX, Xvid, MPEG-4 Part 2) that are not MP4-compatible, so the file must be fully re-encoded to H.264 rather than simply repackaged. Re-encoding is more work than a remux.
Usually yes. H.264 compresses far more efficiently than the codecs in most AVI files, so the MP4 is often significantly smaller at similar quality.
Re-encoding is lossy by nature, but at the High quality setting the difference is hard to notice. Lower settings shrink the file further at the cost of some detail.
Yes. Drop multiple files into the box and EasyConvert converts them in a batch, then lets you download them together as a ZIP.
